Spotlight – Nalafem Collective

We joined the campaign of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence to shed light on young feminists voices and work in Africa, and we continued our extensive advocacy on ending Female Genintal Mutulation (FGM) and child marriage among other harmful practices.

We organized roundtables to collect the needs of African climate activists to support their work. It was clearly highlighted that amplifying the voices of young African women at COP27 was needed. Therefore, we fundraised and led a delegation of eight young women, whom we trained and funded their participation at COP27, and provided small grants and opportunities for speaking engagements, bilateral meetings, and media coverage. The climate activists developed and voiced their unique advocacy messages of climate action in the high-level conference.

Being part of COP27 and decision-making is very important for us to express our ideas and solutions. Regardless of the changes that come across in this COP and beyond, we need to push ourselves upwards and onwards and continue our advocacy”

Zuhura Ahmadi Shaweji, Tanzania
Zuhura is a climate change activist and girls' education advocate. Being part of COP27 enabled her to be connected with two organizations with which she will collaborate. Plastic Pink and National Geographic Explore working on empowering women and youth on how to live environmentally friendly while they have low income.

During COP27 preparation meetings, kazi expressed a fear of public speaking and an unreadiness to participate in public discussions. After coaching sessions by Nalafem and peer encouragement, she was able to clearly articulate her opinions on a discussion panel in the Youth and Children pavilion.

I learned a lot from, and I am sure that I can apply it in my community. We came to COP27, and we voiced out messages of women and girls back in our communities”

Esther is the marketing and communications director of Green Girls Platform, a female-led initiative that works to address the violence that girls and women face due to Climate Change in Malawi. She believes that having more African young voices at the COP enables an intergenerational dialogue.
